I'll never forget the snowstorm of all snowstorms in Cleveland, Ohio.
School was canceled. My sister and I were snowed in with my mom. We were sitting at the dining table, just catching up, when we heard this strange, rhythmic sound coming from my mom's room.
Shhoo... shhoo... shhoo.
We were curious, and honestly, a little concerned. So we went to check on her.
What we found changed everything for me.
My mom; aĀ fierce, creative, determined woman I and so many other people looked up to was standing in front of an open window, practically naked, drenched in sweat. She was desperate for relief, using the biting cold from outside to cool her body down from an intense hot flash. That was the first of many that I saw my mom suffer through.
She was caught in a silent battle with menopause.
She dealt with intense hot flashes, relentless headaches, and a host of sudden health issues that led her to rely on a cocktail of medications, none of which seemed to give her much relief. And yet, she carried on, meeting the needs of our family and her work first, as so many mothers do, even as her own health and comfort declined.
Menopause was never discussed in our house. It was just "the change", something whispered about and endured alone.
Witnessing her suffering in silence left a lasting impact on me.
